Desktop Site Mode & Wrong Screen Detection

Why mobile browsers report wrong resolution with desktop mode on — and how to fix detection.

If MyScreenSize shows a laptop or wrong phone model on mobile, desktop site mode is a common cause. Browsers report a wide viewport and desktop user-agent strings, which breaks screen detection.

What is desktop site mode?

Mobile browsers can request the desktop version of a website. Safari calls it "Request Desktop Website"; Chrome on Android uses "Desktop site" in the menu. The page layout widens and JavaScript sees a desktop-like screen width.

How to turn it off

iPhone (Safari)

  1. Tap aA in the address bar.
  2. Uncheck Request Desktop Website.
  3. Reload MyScreenSize.com.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the ⋮ menu.
  2. Turn off Desktop site.
  3. Reload the page.

Tablets and split-screen

iPad multitasking and floating windows can report unusual dimensions. For tablet reference sizes, see iPad & tablet screen sizes.
