Viewing Distance & PPI Comfort Guide

Find comfortable viewing distance for phones, tablets, and monitors based on PPI and screen size.

Comfortable viewing distance depends on screen size and PPI. This guide helps you estimate a good distance for phones, tablets, and monitors — and calculate exact PPI with our PPI calculator.

Rule of thumb by device

Device Typical distance PPI goal
Phone 10–14 inches (25–35 cm) 300+ PPI feels sharp
Tablet 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) 264+ PPI common on iPad
Laptop 20–24 inches (50–60 cm) 140–220 PPI typical
Desktop monitor 24–30 inches (60–75 cm) 90–140 PPI often sufficient

Why PPI matters at distance

The farther your eyes are from the screen, the lower the PPI needed before pixels disappear. That is why a 27" 4K monitor (≈163 PPI) looks crisp at desk distance while a 27" 1080p panel (≈81 PPI) can look soft.

Read resolution vs screen size for how PPI is calculated.
