Comfortable viewing distance depends on screen size and PPI. This guide helps you estimate a good distance for phones, tablets, and monitors — and calculate exact PPI with our PPI calculator.
Rule of thumb by device
| Device | Typical distance | PPI goal |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | 10–14 inches (25–35 cm) | 300+ PPI feels sharp |
| Tablet | 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) | 264+ PPI common on iPad |
| Laptop | 20–24 inches (50–60 cm) | 140–220 PPI typical |
| Desktop monitor | 24–30 inches (60–75 cm) | 90–140 PPI often sufficient |
Why PPI matters at distance
The farther your eyes are from the screen, the lower the PPI needed before pixels disappear. That is why a 27" 4K monitor (≈163 PPI) looks crisp at desk distance while a 27" 1080p panel (≈81 PPI) can look soft.
